Members of the prestigious Tiger Golf Club (TGC) recently completed a successful five-day visit to Brunei from November 27 to 31, 2024, with the goal of strengthening cultural, golfing, and business ties between the two nations. This visit aimed to promote international cooperation and mutual understanding through the unifying platforms of sport and commerce.
During their stay, TGC members had the privilege of playing at two of Brunei's most renowned golf courses: the Empire Golf Course and the Royal Brunei Golf Course. The itinerary included a practice session and a formal tournament, providing an ideal blend of friendly competition and cultural exchange.
As global golf tourism continues to rise, the industry has become a significant driver of local economies and a catalyst for international interactions. Brunei, in particular, is capitalizing on this trend, with golf increasingly drawing international visitors. The TGC delegation, comprising 46 members and their families, made a notable impact on the local golf tourism scene.
Brunei’s economy, which is largely driven by its oil and gas sector, boasts one of the highest GDPs per capita in the world. However, the country is eager to diversify its economic base, and golf tourism is an integral part of this strategy. Bangladesh, home to the TGC, has also experienced impressive economic growth, averaging around 7% annually over the past decade. Both nations recognize the potential of sports—especially golf—as a means of economic and business development.
Beyond golf, the TGC delegation immersed themselves in Brunei’s rich cultural heritage and breathtaking natural landscapes. Their itinerary included excursions to the Muara and Temburong districts, as well as a city tour that featured highlights such as the Brunei Museum, a scenic boat ride through the Water Village, a wildlife safari, and visits to iconic landmarks like the SOAS Bridge and Mosque, the bustling Night Market in Gadong, and the magnificent Jame Asr Hassanil Bolkiah Mosque. Additionally, participants relaxed at the ABODE Resort & Spa and explored the Islamic Museum.
The visit also focused on fostering economic engagement, with a special emphasis on business development. TGC members attended a presentation by the Brunei Economic Development Board and participated in B2B meetings with local entrepreneurs. This initiative opened up avenues for potential collaborations and helped strengthen business ties, laying the groundwork for future partnerships.
Through this multifaceted visit, the TGC aimed to forge lasting connections with Brunei, embracing a holistic approach that combines a love for golf with cultural enrichment and business development. This initiative underscores the club’s commitment to using sports as a platform for fostering broader cultural and economic exchanges, reflecting a shared vision of prosperity through international cooperation.
