
Indian national cricket team star and vice captain Shubman Gill has overtaken former Pakistan national cricket team captain Babar Azam to become the top-ranked ODI batter in the world according to the latest ICC rankings released on Wednesday, February 19.
Gill's ascent to the No.1 spot follows his outstanding performance in the recently concluded 3-match ODI series against England cricket team , where he racked up 259 runs at an impressive average of 86.33.
The 25-year-old talented Indian batter scored one century and two fifties during the series, helping India secure a 3-0 sweep at home. His efforts earned him a rating of 796 points propelling him past Babar Azam, who now holds 773 points. This marks the second time Gill has dethroned Babar for the top spot, the first being during the 2023 ODI World Cup.
Ahed of ICC Champions Trophy 2025 Gill’s recent performances have bolstered India’s ODI lineup and his consistency has been a key factor in his rise. His latest achievement makes him the fourth Indian to become the world’s No.1 ODI batter joining the ranks of Legends Sachin Tendulkar, Virat Kohli, and World cup winning captain MS Dhoni.
